Hi,

this is it, what might fix Luis aarch64 tests hopefully, please confirm.

It still misses a good test case, though.

I attached both the fixed version of my inline end patch,
and a diff of the test results:

 + is results with 3349112e380712432d5818154d67ab4660af056f.
 - is results with this patch applied to above version.

I often have a hard time to tell which is a regression and which is
just because of transient errors, where test cases are not stable.

I hope this also helps with the Problem that Andrew is tackling
in the other patch, since I keep at least some line-entries as is-stmt
which were previously just deleted, or converted to non-is-stmt,
that is what makes the issue from the patch description.

This changes only line table entries that are at the same PC as
an end of inline function block.  Exactly that is the information
that is missing in the DWARF format, therefore it is not possible
to just fix gcc IMHO, we must fix the DWARF format, thus create
a new version, implement that in gcc and in gdb, that should tell
us what to do with the line entries at these special places.

Andrew, could you try this, if this patch fixes your problem,
or at least does not make it harder to fix?

The objections I raised in:

I think mostly apply to this revision too.  So this is still not
approved.

The primary objection is (miss-)treatment of range endings and empty
ranges.  You've expressed your position in other mail, so I wont try
to repeat you for fear of straw-manning your position.  But for me any
solution would need to acknowledge that this is a work around for bugs
in the DWARF generated by specific versions of GCC, and weren't
present in much older versions of GCC, and might not be present in
newer versions of GCC, nor might these bugs be present in other
producers of DWARF.

In better news, I think my objection related to the lack of use of
std::vector would be easy enough to work around.  This patch should
absolutely use std::vector, but a later patch can introduce
gdb::vector.

For those compilers where the performance of std::vector is good
enough, we make gdb::vector an alias for std::vector.  For those
compiler where you are aware of a performance problem with
std::vector, then make gdb::vector a completely new, API compatible
implementation of std::vector.  Heck, GCC code is copyright assigned
to FSF, so if GCC's std::vector is good enough you could just copy the
implementation from there.

which your patch was trying to solve in a way
that I would raise objections for.

So the question is: does it fix something for you or does it
make it worse?
I ask because I do not know, and I think the question deserves

You should not underestimate, how difficult fixing the empty range thing
in gcc can be.  Also the range endings can be difficult, gcc does not
know the view number, that is magic of the assembler.

The only way I see how gcc can fix it is by disabling -gstatement-frontiers.
Everyhing else will be way too painful, I tried it and got a bloody nose
from that :-)

Then we can also revert all of the is-stmt patches completely.

But I believe our current debug-exerience did improve, there are a few
things where it might regress, but most if not all of them are fixable.

Probably, I did not even consider anything like that.
I am not really familiar with that part of the gcc code base either.
Fact is I don't like it (C++), please don't ask me for something I
don't like to do.  Just do it yourself, I do not mind if you change
that part to be how you like it the most.

And Yes, I work around problems all day.  And I just don't compain any more.

I already said, that I consider that a dwarf2 design flaw.
Of course older versions of GCC did not emit non-is-stmt line info.
Also just for reference, I see lots of regressions due to
the column info in the debug info which nobody needs.

Previously there was just one line info when the statement started,
now there are line info in between, they trigger all kind of problems.

See for instance in gdbtestsuite/gdb.base/skip.exp
I had to add this:

to work around the additional line breakpoints due to the column info.
This regression would not occur if -gcolumn-info would not be enabled
by default, that is a pretty useless debug info, especially when it is
in macro expansions.  We could do better and filter more of the effects
of the column line info away, or we could even implement column info.
